This Friday is the Testudo Challenge on campus. The first male and female student to rub the noses of all the bronze testudo statues on campus (excluding the one inside Byrd Stadium) will win a great prize! Start = Testudo statue in front of McKeldin Library. Finish = Testudo statue at Comcast Center. ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of ways to stay busy on campus. As mentioned above, the Hoff Theater and TerpZone are great choices. Hoff Theater plays movies during throughout the week that cost $3.00 for UMD students and $5.00 for no students. It is a great way to relax or catch up on movies that recently left theaters. TerpZone is also a great place to play pool, bowl, or arcade games.
If you are looking for interesting places on campus with history, like the Testudo statues, you can visit the star in between Shoemaker and Lafrak hall. The star is interesting to many people because it plays a huge part of the university's history. Most students believe if you step on the crack you will not graduate on time because all of the pieces of the start point to all of the buildings that were on campus prior to the fire.
Hi my name is Camille Coleman and I am an animal science major here at Maryland and will also by an orientation advisor this summer. This school has so many amazing places that I just want to really exploroe the school while you are here. One of my favorite places to go when I have some free time on campus is The Dairy in the visitors center. They have some food options, but most importantly some amazing ice cream. I would also suggest just checking out some of the new buildings. CSPAC is gorgeous and has plays and performances all the time that are usually either free or for a low price for students. Also both Byrd Stadium and Comcast has sports going on frequently but also are sometimes used for speakers, concerts, or comedians for students.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Kelsey Welsch, I am a rising junior Agriculture and Science Technology Major. I will be an orientation advior for the Summer of 2011.
The University of Maryland is a huge campus that can be overwhelming when you first arrive. Making sure to find quick short cut routes to class and other places is essential. But, do not fall into a routine that you never get out of. When the weather is nice, or you happen to get out 30 minutes early from lab take the time to walk around campus on a different path. Possibly walk through a building just to see if you can make it through to the other side. Get lost.
It is one of my goals to explore each building that is here at the University of Maryland. This can be through classes, visiting a friend in their residence hall, or I just need to find somewhere to use the restroom. So far I think I am doing pretty well.
One of my favorite places to go is the backyard of CSPAC. It is a secret that I learned from a friend of mine and that I hope you will pass on to others. The backyard is full of a great big lawn with a few hills. Sometimes I forget that I am in college park. It is great for eating or studying outside because of the tables but also great for playing frisbee.
I am sure you will find your favorite place to meet with your friends or to enjoy the outdoors. Maybe you will even find the perfect seat in Stamp Student Union to drink coffee. Make sure to take advantage of the beautiful campus and the many secrets it holds. Try to find some excuse to enter a new building with any amount of free time you may acquire.

Hey there Terps and fellow explorers! My name is Jake DeVirgiliis and I am a sophomore Government & Politics and English major, as well as an Orientation Advisor for summer 2011.
ReplyDeleteOne of my absolute favorite parts of going to school about Maryland is the beautiful campus. My friends and I often stroll through it at night looking for cool new places, and trust me, there are a lot of them. We often try and head for higher altitudes, and have found a few places that are so high you can see the Washington Monument in DC! In the interest of preserving my employment here, I probably can’t tell you how to get to those places, but have fun exploring on your own! To start off, try Francis Scott Key Hall. There are a set of stairs that lead to the first floor in front of the building, beneath it are the doors to the ground floor. Follow the path around the ground floor entrance and it will take you to a secluded courtyard where you can walk up the stairs to the first floor roof!
Another place on campus worth checking out, though not nearly as secret, is the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance by the Chapel. The flowers are beautiful, and it’s a nice quiet spot to sit and reflect… or remember. There are even little notebooks on the benches you can write memories in.
Be sure to give these places a shot, but don't forget to explore on your own! Nothing beats the thrill of finding an awesome new hangout spot on your own and going back to it.
