The University of Maryland has over 550 student groups for you to join. You can find those groups at www.stars.umd.edu. Once you get involved in an organization, learn how to become a part of the leadership of that organization.
However, one of the best ways to continue your growth to becoming an amazing leader is to check out all of the different retreat, seminars, internships and leadership programs available through the Office of Campus Programs in The Stamp Student Union. Check out their website here.
One of the most exciting new minors available at UMD through the Stamp is the Leadership Minor. You have to start as a Freshman or Sophomore transfer, so check into that immediately. Students take a series of four courses during their time at UM and receive the notation on their transcript.
There is also a Transfer Student Turtle Camp. Their purpose reads: "Turtle Camp is facilitated by the Peer Leadership Council, a group of trained leadership educators and students at the University of Maryland. The goals of the program are: to enhance each members understanding of leadership, to recognize the different styles of leadership and identify one's own personal style of leadership, to create opportunities to interact with current campus leaders, and to introduce each member to the endless leadership opportunities on campus. The sessions are interactive and designed so that participants really get to know one another and practice what they are learning." Check out the information here.
UMD has so much to offer and we are proud to be educating some of the best leaders in the world!
What type of leadership opportunities do you want to get involved with once you get to the University?
Hi, My name is Amanda and I'm a Freshman Government and Politics Major, my college is the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. I'm an Orientation Advisor for the Summer of 2010 and am also involved in the Student Government Association. There are so many great leadership opportunities through the Student Government Association including numerous committees (for homecoming, Maryland Day, and other projects that you might be interested in) to get involved in, as well as executive and legislative positions! Being involved in SGA definitely helps with introducing you to new people, and it also gives you contacts throughout the student body that could prove useful in your future endeavors! If you're interested, visit the student involvement suite in Stamp!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I participated in the Freshman Turtle Camp program and it is very useful if you're looking for a diverse group of people to discuss leadership with! I looked forward to finding out new things about myself every week! For more information about that, check out the Peer Leadership Council!

Hi! My name is Evan and I am a sophomore History major, French minor in the College of Arts & Humanities. I will also be an Orientation Advisor for Summer 2010. There are so many ways to get involved in leadership positions on campus. As Amanda mentioned, there is the SGA and Turtle Camp. I also participated in the Maryland Leadership Conference and the O.N.E. UMD conference, both of which are great opportunities to get involved and meet other UMD student leaders. Some of these conferences cost money, but many student organizations fund their members to attend these in order to bring back skills and connections to help out the club. The Office of Campus Programs website is a great place to get started, so is the club organization site(STARS.umd.edu), and so is the community service learning site, csl.umd.edu. Also, take a walk through the Student Involvement Suite located in STAMP Student Union and look for clubs that interest you. All clubs are required to keep office hours, so don't be shy, just ask how to get involved!
