Turkey Time

Hey Terps! It's almost Turkey Time and that means that I am out of here for a short vacay!

I just wanted to leave you with some information on traveling home for the holidays.

The UMD campus is nicely located for easy access to many modes of transportation.

To get to either DCA, take the 140 Metro bus to the College Park Metro from the Stamp Union. Jump on the green line into DC and transfer to the Yellow (at Gallery Place) or the Blue (at L'enfant Plaza). It drops you off right at the airport.

To get to BWI, take the Green line to Greenbelt. Jump on the B30 bus which leaves every 45 minutes and costs $3.10 to the airport.

To get to Amtrak, take the Green line, transfer to the red line at Ft. Totten and take it to Union Station. You can also catch the GreyHound busses at Union Station.

The University of Maryland Department of Transportation also provides buses for a cheap fair to NJ, New Jersey and Philadelphia (destinations may change). These are usually pretty affordable trips and its provided through the University. Visit the DOTS website here for more information.

Please have safe travels and we will see you all soon!!

What are some other ways that you get home for the holidays besides driving?

  2. Hey everyone, my name's Vanessa and I'm a junior English and Linguistics major from New Jersey, as well as an Orientation advisor. I don't have a car on campus, and in the 2 and a half years I've been at Maryland, I've had the chance to figure out a bunch of different ways of getting home cheaply and easily. I've taken the bus that Maryland provides during winter and Thanksgiving break which is SUPER convenient since it leaves from the Stamp Student Union in the middle of campus, which saves me the trip of having to bring my luggage to the metro or elsewhere. It's also pretty comfy and has a bathroom (useful for when you're stuck in the Thanksgiving beltway traffic on the way back). You also meet a lot of other MD students from that area too if you take this bus (check out dots.umd.edu for more info). Generally, I recommend the Bolt Bus (boltbus.com) because it's cheap, comfortable, has free wireless on the bus, and gives you a few options of getting where you need to go leaving from DC or the Greenbelt metro station. You can get there by easily taking the metro bus leaving from the Stamp Student Union, and hopping on the green line College Park metro station. Rates usually go between $15-$20 in my experience, but sometimes you can be that lucky person who gets the $1 ticket (hasn't happened to met yet). I also HIGHLY recommend shelling out the money for an Amtrak ticket during the Thanksgiving break on the way BACK. The ride there isn't too bad if you don't leave during rush hour, but trust me, experience has taught me that paying a $70 train ticket is way worth the chances of getting stuck in 9 hour traffic coming home (true story). Other than that, I've definitely begged a few rides off people since there is a good Jersey/New York population here at the school. Just be nice and offer to pay for some of the tolls and gas expenses, and relinquish rights to control the radio stations. So whether you're going home for Thanksgiving, spring break, or even just for the weekend, Maryland's location and services provided by the school make your life pretty easy in figuring out the best way to get there.
