So this is the new year...

Welcome to 2010! This year is sure to bring a lot of great things for the University of Maryland.

The biggest is something that I posted about a few weeks back: the I-Series classes. There are still a lot of seats open, so make sure that you take this opportunity while it still exists. Read it here.

Basketball season has started and we are heading into the ACC opener this Sunday against Florida State University (my undergraduate Alma Mater. Maryland is my graduate Alma Mater. It usually causes me to question my loyalties throughout any given game between the two institutions).

Maryland continues to rise in the rankings in multiple areas including study abroad programs and research programs.

And, of course, we will bring in another group of diverse and talented students into the university. I hope you have a great new year and are able to fulfill all your goals and resolutions.

On a sadder note, Robert H. Smith, a great benefactor to the University passed away recently. Below is the obituary posted by the University.

"The University of Maryland is mourning the loss of Robert H. Smith—a 1950 graduate and the university's largest benefactor. Smith was a visionary builder-developer, best known for the vast Crystal City complex in Arlington, Va. He is former chairman of Charles E. Smith Commercial Realty, a division of Vornado Realty Trust, and former chairman of Charles E. Smith Residential, a division of Archstone-Smith.

At the University of Maryland, he was steadfast and enormously generous in his support of business education and the performing arts. In 1998, the university named its business school, the Robert H. Smith School of Business, after him. And the university's performing arts center was named in honor of Smith's wife, Clarice Smith. Both are testaments to Smith's belief in excellence and opportunity.

Smith died on Tuesday at Winchester Medical Center following a stroke."
