Interested in journalism? Or just interested in getting your opinion out there? Well there are a ton of student run newpapers that hit the stands on a daily or monthly basis. Probably the most well-known paper is The Diamondback. Even though the paper is about the University of Maryland mainly, it's actually an independently owned paper. However, students write and develop a majority of the paper's content.

The Diamondback comes out daily and twice a week during the summer. Stories range from news, to beat, to special interest pieces. There are also cartoons that students draw and write and a verity of opinion columns. It is a well-known and award winning paper.
Other papers include:
The Maryland Cow Nipple
Black Explosion
Stylus
Terrapin Times
Unwind! Magazine
And more.

Hey everyone! My name's Vanessa and I'm a junior English and Linguistics major. I'm also going to be an Orientation Advisor this summer! I know the Diamondback is one of the things I look forward to reading every day, since it always has informative and entertaining articles about what's going on both on and off campus. Also, a lot of my friends write for the Diamondback and other magazines/newspapers (Journalism AND non-Journalism majors), since it's always a great experience to get published in such respectable media outlets! One of my friends even draws the political cartoon for the Diamondback every Monday! So regardless of whether you're an English, Journalism, or some other major, having so many opportunities on campus to be published is an awesome way to get experience, pad your resume, and get your voice heard!
ReplyDeleteHi all! My name is Judy and I am a sophomore History and Jewish Studies Major. This summer I am going to be an Orientation Advisor with Vanessa!
ReplyDeleteIn addition to the papers stated above you can also get involved in cultural papers such as the Mitzpeh (the Jewish student run paper) and the Public Asian (the Asian student run paper). These papers are less time consuming then some of the bigger papers on campus. My roommate works for the Mitzpeh and loves it!
