And the Terps win at the buzzer!!

Well not really. We actually ran up the score a bit towards the end which was nice and were able to solidify a win against Number 4 Duke last night.

We've already talked about sports and the fun and camaraderie of being at a sporting event with your friends and fellow students, but what happened after the game is the talk of the campus right now. Was it a riot? Or was it just youthful celebration?

It probably depends on who you talk to, and I don't want to make any kind of opinion on this site, but I have provided the link to The Diamondback story for you to make your own decision.

What is important to remember, is that whether or not you THINK it's rioting, if you get arrested, your name will be sent to the Office of Student Conduct on campus. Even if the event occurs off campus, UMD and College Park have an agreement which allows the police to arrest and charge you with a crime and then sanction you through Student Conduct. After you receive your due process from the student-led conduct board, you can be suspended or even expelled for your actions.

You can read more about the rioting policy here.

Be safe and stay classy College Park!

Go Terps!

Were you at the game? Riot or just plain celebration?

  1. Hi, my name is Judy and I will be an orientation adviser this summer! I think this is a very debatable, sticky subject. Many of my friends who "attended the riot" were actually just trying to get a bite to eat or go out and celebrate at the downtown bars.

Anyway here is my opinion: A riot is defined as "a form of civil disorder characterized by disorganized groups lashing out in a sudden and intense rash of violence against people or property. Riots are typically chaotic and exhibit herd behavior" -Wikipedia

I do not think anyone would have been in downtown College Park screaming their heads off or pulling out street signs alone. This was a group of celebrating students who yes, I am going to say it, took it too far. I am actually in a history class specifically about social violence (Hist219Q, Smead) and every characteristic of the "celebration" falls into riot/social violence.

In conclusion, my advice to all students is if you posted photos or joined any facebook group that showed you in the midst of the riots that could incriminate you. TAKE IT DOWN! This school is too great to lose over something so silly, regardless of your opinion of it.

PS: GO MARYLAND!! ACC CHAMPS :)

  2. Hi my name is James and I am an orientation adviser for the Summer of 2010.

Maryland is a Division-1 school and are highly competitive in basketball. This year Vasquez was named the ACC Player of the Year and Gary Williams was named the ACC Coach of the Year. Also this game was also claimed as the Game of the Year according to ESPN.com

Duke has been a rival school for many of years and this win gave us the first ACC conference championship since 2002!!!

Lastly, as you can see by the picture we have lots of school pride and we would love for everyone to be apart of it!!! I personally think that game was one of the best experiences ever.

  3. Hi my name is James (not the same one as the last comment), and I will also be an orientation advisor this upcoming summer
I just wanted to talk a little about the sports programs at Maryland. Going to sports events is one of the easiest ways to feel connected to the University and have a great time. As this game showed, the campus really unites for big games, and why shouldn't we? Were a competitive school in a competitive conference in division 1. Maryland makes it very easy to get tickets to these games too, and its free. tickets.umd.edu is a very easy to use and convenient resource. As long as you stay on top of request and claim dates, it is simple to obtain and print your tickets online.
I highly reccomend attending these basketball, football, or any other sporting event. For those of you on North Campus, soccer games can be a lot of fun and only a short walk away.
    Go terps.
