  1. My name is Cristin Carey and I am a sophomore Kinesiology major here at UMD. Also, I am going to be an Orientation Advisor this summer. Getting involved is one of the most important ways to enjoy your experience here at UMD while also making it a worthwhile learning experience. That being said, participating in community service events is one of the best ways to get involved on campus. Not only does it look great on a resume, but more importantly, it is a way to help others, help the surrounding community, and learn something new. There are hundreds of community service opportunities offered on and off campus at UMD. Many of the fraternities and sororities hold community service events that pertain to certain philanthropies, such as domestic violence awareness or hunger and homelessness awareness. The fraternity or sorority may put on a 5k, sports event, or other activity that anyone on campus can participate in or help out at. If you are interested in service trips, I would also highly recommend the Stamp Alternative Break program that offers various week long community service trips to different locations across the country. I personally have experience with this program and can attest that it was not only a great way to help others and gain a worthwhile learning experience, but it was a great way to meet others on campus that have similar interests to mine. These trips are offered during winter, summer, and spring breaks and you can find out more information at this website: http://www.studentaffairs.umd.edu/dev/alternative%20breaks.html. Furthermore, there are tons of other events to volunteer at that can be found at http://www.csl.umd.edu/, the Office of Community Service Learning at UMD. As the blog post above me also explains, there is also Terp Service Weekend where students help communities in the surrounding area. Hundreds of UMD students are involved during this weekend so it also provides a great way to meet your peers on campus!
