Make sure you mark your calendar to show up to the event for a couple hours and look around. At the least, you will see what Maryland has to offer and get a few free pens.

Mark your calendar!
Research has shown that students who get involved at their university and feel a commitment to it are more likely to graduate. We know that this is true at the University of Maryland as well. The largest involvement event of the year is the First Look Fair. The First Look Fair is a large event that takes place on the McKeldin Mall each Fall. This year it is September 15-16 from 10am-2pm on each day. Approximately 500 clubs and organizations and local vendors show up to give away free items and to recruit you to their organizations. Offices will showcase their services and sometimes you can even find job opportunities (like being an Orientation Advisor, www.bethemost.com).

ReplyDeleteIn addition to the First look fair, Make sure you find the Advising team for your major of Interest. I know with my experience there was a the pre-health society that has been extremely helpful with my educational track. They hold different workshops and different meetings that inform you of making the right decisions with your major. It can also help you network with people that have similar interest as you in the academic field. So when you attend the First look fair, dont just be on the lookout for the "FUN" clubs but also for those that can be especially beneficial for your future.
Hey fellow Terps! My name is Miriam Meskel and I am a sophomore Communications major from Baltimore, Maryland. I am also very excited to be an Orientation Advisor this summer! Just in case you missed First Look Fair, don’t be discouraged from searching for ways to get involved on campus! There over 500 student organizations on campus to choose from that are all different and waiting for you to find out about them. The clubs and organizations range from academic fraternities to Massage Club to even the UMD Quidditch Team! No matter what you are interested in, there is a club on campus here for you.
ReplyDeleteIn the rare case that there is not a club for your particular interest or hobby, you can start an organization yourself! It’s very simple. All you need is at least eight people to form a student group, a constitution, and to complete the application online at http://www.stars.umd.edu/. There are endless possibilities of student involvement here at the University of Maryland.
Also, you can be a part of more than one organization! I myself am involved in a few organizations. As a member of Greek life, I am a very active member in my sorority as well as in the National Pan-Hellenic Council on campus. Although sometimes life gets a little hectic and stressful, the bonds and relationships I have formed are truly priceless and I will have them long after I graduate from the University.
Becoming involved on campus is the best decision I have made as a student here at the University of Maryland. Learning so much in the various positions I hold and gaining extensive leadership experience, I feel as though I am preparing myself for life after college. Through my student involvement, I have grown extensively as a person and feel confident in tackling leadership positions wherever life takes me.
