  1. Hey Terps!
My name is Vaughn Midder and I’m a freshman theatre and communication double major within the College of Arts and Humanities. I’m an orientation advisor for the summer of 2011, and I just wanted to comment on how alternative breaks are an excellent opportunity for those of you who enjoy community service and also seek to broaden your cultural awareness in general. The University of Maryland truly prides itself on its incredibly diverse student body. Cultural awareness and multiethnic studies are something we definitely value. One of the ways the university promotes this is through its education abroad program. Students seeking to broaden their cultural knowledge, gain an impressive experience to include on resumes and mention to future employers, and earn academic credit in the process should visit http://www.international.umd.edu/studyabroad/. The education abroad office is located in 1125 Holzapfel Hall. Students can study abroad for short or long periods of time, for three weeks or an entire semester. Friends of mine have traveled to Chile, Scotland, Ghana, and gained amazing life experiences. I plan to travel abroad during a winter break in the future, and there are various scholarships to help students afford the costs of traveling. Nowadays, employers are looking for over-the-top experiences students can speak on such as living abroad to set them apart from other applicants.
