  1. Hey everyone,
My name is Eberechi Ihezie, I am a rising sophomore Marketing Major in the Smith School of Business and also an orientation advisor. I actually work for SEE and can tell you firsthand about the benefits of being a part of it. SEE has 22 departments, from finance to comedy to website and has three departments that have student team members. Undergraduate students can be a part of the Marketing, Security or Tech teams. Marketing team members promote the various events with facebook statuses, chalking and flier handouts. The members log these hours and are then eligible for SEE goodies. The Tech and Security team member positions are paid positions. With Security you are responsible for watching crowds, monitoring persons accessing the talent and the area and in general being vigilant. Tech team members are responsible to setting up the venue with lights, sound, etc and for breaking it down and returning it back to original condition. I was very involved in Tech and Security and I want to first say this: this is a job!!! Before getting to any benefits, it should be clear that you will be working and that slacking off should not be encouraged. However, if you are willing to work, then I will share with you my experience of Art Attack, SEE’s end of year fair and concert.
This year we had Nelly performing in Byrd Stadium. I helped build the stage over two mornings. This involved serious manual labor. Because trucks are not allowed to drive directly on the field we had to lay down sheets of plywood down and create a path for the truck. This is more difficult than it sounds and involved over 30 pieces of plywood being placed and replaced multiple times. As the truck transformed into a stage, it was our job to help set up with lights and pillars and sound. I also helped set up spotlights, helping to pick up what felt like 500 pounds each time we lifted a light. I also worked security for the event, having to stop pictures being taken (think for second of someone you really want to see live and how badly you’d want to take a picture…got it?...now imagine having to stop 50 of those people as part of you job and having to play a pivotal role in the impromptu mass evacuation to the first and second level concourse because of lightning during the concert. I then helped break down the stage and drive the truck off, which without going into detail took from 11:00pm to 4:00am.
Now, that being said, I had a blast. Yes being security involves being constantly vigilant, but I also got to be a human barricade, so I was right next to the stage when nelly performed. Also, as a member of security, I got a picture with him at the end. Being involved with tech and security during throughout the day also meant that I was given the treatment. We had Bagel Place for breakfast, Potbelly for Lunch and Chipotle for dinner, not to mention Gatorade, sun chips, various sodas, donuts, cookies, and all kinds of sweets. There was also plenty of laughs to be had with the other members and with the workers. I had a blast and would recommend SEE to anyone, if only to work Art Attack at the end of the year.
