I'm hungry

Yesterday I rushed out of my house and on the way to work realized that I had nothing to eat for lunch. Lucky for me, the University provides a plethora of dining options. For a complete list, check out www.dining.umd.edu/locations. But I wanted to highlight some of them for you here.

Food Court- The Food Court in the Stamp Student Union has many options for the hungry Terp. Chik-Fil-A, Panda and Panda Sushi, Taco Bell, Sbarro, Salad Works, and McDonald's are in the upstairs food court. Down by the Terp Zone (bowling and billiards) is Subway and the Food Co-Op, serving organic freshly prepared and packaged food (including the hot meal of the day).

Diners- There are two diners, one on North Campus (near the Comcast Center) and one on South Campus (near the Business School). You do NOT need a meal plan to eat here. All items are a la carte.

Shops and Cafes: Shops and cafes are located all across campus. Cafes are located in the McKeldin Library and also many academic buildings. Grab a sandwich, chips and a drink in between classes when you don't have a chance to sit or other quick snack items. The Coffee Shop in the Union and Footnotes Cafe in the Library both serve coffee and tea items in addition to food.

Restaurants: If you have some extra time or you want to have something a bit nicer, then you can check out Adele's Restaurant in the Stamp Student Union or Mulligan's Grill and Pub at the Golf Course. Both of these options are open to all Terps.

How to pay for food: All locations take cash, credit or debit. If you have a meal plan, you will need to check out your individual meal plan's options.

If you bring your own food to campus, there is a microwave in the union located by the print shop that is open for anybody to use.

No matter where you are on campus, you will never go hungry if you know where the food options are.

And don't forget, the best ice cream on campus is found at the Dairy located in the Visitor's Center on Route 1.

My favorite flavor: Fear the Turtle!

Where do you like to eat on campus? Did I forget any locations that you recommend?

  1. Hey everyone! My name's Vanessa and I'm a junior English and Linguistics major. I'm also going to be an Orientation Adviser this summer! So I live somewhat off campus and I know that there are always times between classes where I just don't have time to hike all the way home just to get myself lunch/dinner. Also, I don't always have the funds to spend it at the food court every day. However, there really are so many options on campus and I'm always surprised by the new options I find. For instance, I lived on South Campus my sophomore year, but this year they just created a new "Create Your Own Pasta" station which is AMAZING. My suggestion would be sundried tomatoes+chicken+pesto+alfredo, but you can check it out yourself. Also, even though this is my third year at Maryland, I also just last week discovered the vegan chicken salad at the co-op. Even though I'm definitely not a vegan by any means, it was such a delicious and (more importantly) inexpensive alternative located right in the middle of campus! The dining options are always changing on campus so keep an open mind about new foods, and always be prepared to find good, inexpensive options in unexpected places!

  2. Hi! My name is Evan and I am a sophomore History major, French minor in the College of Arts and Humanities. I will be an Orientation Advisor (OA) for Summer 2010. Vanessa knows what's up--the make your own pasta bar is amazing! Big fan.

Also, if you're not familiar with the South Campus Diner, don't forget about the food options in the back. There is "Jalapeno Grille" which makes great make-your-own burritos, tacos, etc and also a Mongolian BBQ place where you get to pick your own ingredients and watch your food get cooked right in front of you. Very cool. Also, check out some of the new desserts that the dining hall has. They really have improved since last year--I had tiramisu the other day. I mean come on, tiramisu! So good!

  3. Hey! My name's Trey and I'm a freshman finance major. I'm going to be an Orientation Advisor this summer also. Coming into my freshman year, one of my major concerns was gaining the dreaded Freshman 15, and, during the first few weeks of the semester, things weren't looking so well as I had fallen in love with the chicken tenders. Thankfully, I discovered the New Yorker at The Diner in North Campus.
In the afternoon, the New Yorker serves the best low-calorie meals (350 calories or less). They give you the choice of chicken, salmon, or (my favorite) spicy beef, one of three kinds of salsas, and one of three kinds of dressings. Then, they stick two bread sticks in the salad to give it that gourmet appearance. And, while the salads at the New Yorker delicious, they are very inexpensive (less than $7 if I believe).
If you're trying to budget dining points and get a healthy meal, the New Yorker is the place to go.

  4. Hi everyone!
I am Judy, an orientation advisor for summer 2010, and I just wanted to mention one more close to campus food source: Route 1. If you ever want some variety there is a lot of choices and many/most will deliver right to your door. I personally have gotten food delivered to me from Noodles, chinese restaurants, and pizza but I know that there are many other choices including Chipotle, Potbellys, and Five Guys. If you go onto campusfood.com you can pull up all the menus and place your order there. This is very helpful on the days you don't want to trek to the diner or the other shops.

  5. Hey Guys, I'm Amanda and I'm a Freshman Government and Politics Major and I will ALSO be an Orientation Advisor this summer with Vanessa, Evan, Trey, Judy and some other AWESOME people!

Food was one of my biggest concerns coming to Maryland, and like everyone said above, there are SO many options ALL over campus. The thing I like most about the campus is the actual dining plans. There are so many ways to mix and match funds to support your eating needs! I have the resident plan (the most common, but not the only dining plan available) and it gives me enough points to eat at both diners (south campus has an amazing place called Jalapeno Grill, just discovered it, it ROCKS) and i have extra money to get a coffee between classes from one of the cafes. There are so many options for dining on campus, many mainstream restaurants such as McDonalds and Chick-fil-A, as well as the Co-Op (which Vanessa mentioned earlier). Hopefully you all find something that fits your needs and suits your preferences!

  6. Hi, my name is Emily and I am a Sophomore General Biology major. In addition, I will also be working for the orientation office during this upcoming summer. So far my favorite place to eat is the Co-Op in the STAMP student union. It is a great place to get fresh food at a very low price, especially since they emphasize the phrase "food for people, not for profit". The other great thing about the co-op is that they have a wrap and sandwich making station, where there is a variety of vegan, vegetarian, and meat options, as well as a daily hot special. The hot special can be anything from macaroni and cheese, to stuffed peppers or vegan burgers, so there is always something new. Finally, they have ready sandwiches in the back for people on the run and various pre-packaged dried fruit and nut mixes that are very convenient to take to class. There are also a variety of healthy drinks, yogurts, and fruits that are sold so you can stock up!

  7. Hi Terps!
My name is Tori Shay and I am a sophomore Communication major. I am going to be an upcoming Orientation Adviser for the summer of 2011 and wanted to tell you all about the wonders of Terrapin Express and my favorite coffee shops! I lived off campus my freshmen and sophomore year so if you are rocking in the same boat as me, Terrapin Express is the way to go! The best thing about terrapin Express is that it NEVER expires and you can use it ANYWHERE on campus!!! I loved having it being an off campus Terp just in case I did want to grab something to eat on campus ont he way to class. Speaking of, how many of you are coffee addicts like me? If you enjoy a daily white chocolate mocha like I do but don't have the cash to go to Starbucks and have some extra money on Terrain Express, hit up one of the coffee shops! They pretty much make a lot of the drinks that Starbucks does and some make them even better! My favorites are Footnotes in McKeldin and Applause in CSPAC! While you're there you can pick up a muffin or croissant too! Yum! Enjoy!
