The Center for Health and Well-Being

Hi everybody!  My name is Anne Penna and I am currently training to be Program Registrar for the Orientation Office for the summer of 2011.  I am also a peer educator and part of the Center for Health and Well-being (CHWB) which is a program branched out of the University Health Center on campus.  We are located in the ERC right next to the Pro Shop (room 0121 Eppley Recreation Center).
We offer a lot of free services to University of Maryland students such as body composition testing, relaxation training, wellness counseling, blood pressure screening, diet analysis , nutritional counseling (on Wednesdays from  3-5pm; Fun Fact: Our school’s nutritionist is the nutritionist for the Washington Redskins, Jane Jakubczak), meditation (on Tuesdays from 6-7pm), magazine checkout (because we all know that the magazines available in the work out rooms can get a bit boring), relaxation zone (come and make a cup of tea, get a healthy snack, do yoga, watch some TV), and other health resources (grocery store tours for cheaper and healthy alternatives to choose when you go food shopping [great resource if you live off campus and cook your own food]).
In addition to these free services, we also go around to various campus (UNIV 100 classes, Health classes, Greek Life, etc.) and off-campus (local high schools and middle schools, etc.) organizations to educate people about topics including stress, sleep, relaxation, nutrition, exercise, mental health, suicide prevention, eating disorders, and body image.
We also hold events in the Center for Health and Wellbeing such as Wellness Mondays (from 6-8pm) and on campus such as Terp Wellness Hut (located in front of Stamp, North/South Campus diner, Cambridge Community Center) where we offer free give aways and fun activities to try to promote the wellbeing of students on campus.
A lot of students are not aware of the free services we offer that can seriously benefit towards a healthy and more productive lifestyle on campus (especially during a transition phase from home to school, or from school to school if you are transferring) and I hope you will take advantage of these great opportunities!  Your body’s physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and environmental health and wellbeing is very important!

  1. It is really good to know the effective result of a fitness program. I have a friend who encourages me to join with their wellness program but I refused to do because I don't know yet what would be the advantages and disadvantages it could give on me. But since you shared your wonderful experience about it, I was attracted to join with this program.
