  1. Hi my name is Paul Levy, a Sophomore Public Health major, and upcoming Orientation Advisor for this summer. I wanted to take the time out and stress how great an advantage it is to be so close to two cities in Baltimore and Washington D.C. while having the Metro system at our disposal. Many people do not take advantage of what these places have to offer, and now with free SmartTrip cards available, there are no real excuses. With the College Park Metro Station so close to campus, including its own shuttle, you can be by the National Mall and Capitol Building in less than 40 minutes. Personally I have taken advantage of this on many occasions and recommend others to do so especially as the weather gets nicer. Most of the museums, including the Smithsonian or National Air and Space museum are free to enter. If you’re not into museums you can still spend a day checking out the sights, tossing around a frisbee or football on the mall with the Lincoln Memorial in the background. After all this, there are hundreds of great restaurants to check out with a variety of options to match all sorts of tastes. These can vary from the historic Ben’s Chili Bowl on U Street to Busboys and Poets, each offering a unique experience and great food.
If you’re a sports fan, the metro system can bring you straight to Navy Yard if you want to catch a Washington Nationals game or to the Verizon Center if you’re a basketball or hockey fan. There are also concerts that happen all the time in local DC clubs and venues, many of which cater to college students. Overall, the metro station is just another great advantage of being at College Park, and an amenity that is often overlooked and underused. It is an affordable alternative to be able to escape the college campus without the burden of having a car and worrying about parking.
As someone from out of state, the metro also provides me ways of getting to DC and taking inexpensive buses to get me to New York or Pennsylvania. This is another advantage instead of resorting to planes or depending on others for their cars. I can also visit friends in local Universities such as Catholic, George Washington, American, or Georgetown with the metro so that I can still stay in contact with friends from home.
