  1. My name is Cristin Carey. I am a sophomore Kinesiology major and am going to be an Orientation Advisor for this summer of 2011. During high school, I was a member of two sports teams that held practices everyday after school. This proved to be a great way to stay in shape, as it was mandatory to attend practices every day. Now that we’re in college, unless we’re on club or varsity sports teams, the majority of us do not have sports practices each day of the week. Without the actual requirement to stay active, it may be difficult for some of us to stay in shape since there is no “rule” to attend the gym now that we’re on our own and no longer answering to authority. As a college student, it is extremely easy to stop working out, eating healthy, and getting enough rest. The dining hall does have healthy options, but there is also that slice of pizza, buffalo chicken wrap, or cookie that we simply just cannot resist when deciding what we should eat for dinner. Also, with the multitude of schoolwork to complete and the many social clubs/groups to be apart of here at UMD, it is easy to stay up too late and bypass the gym or physical activity as a whole.

It is extremely important that we do not neglect our physical health while in college. Events like late night at the ERC as listed above are perfect for helping busy college students like ourselves stay in shape while also having fun. As described in the event flyer, late night at the ERC is perfect for meeting people and getting a good work out at the same time. Activities like such are essential not just for our physical but emotional and mental well-being. Upon arriving at UMD, I would recommend finding a gym buddy, running buddy, or creating an intramural or any other type of team with friends to stay in shape as well as develop good relationships with these people. For example, the first night of college, I asked a group of girls and guys on my floor if they wanted to play pick up soccer on La Plata beach. Sure enough, they were interested and we actually ended up making an intramural team as well! Not to mention, we are all still great friends. At the end of the day, your health is all you have and it’s important to maintain this health by staying active at the University of Maryland!

  2. Hello. My name is Nick Murosko and I am working as an orientation adviser for this upcoming summer (summer 2011). I would just like to take a moment to emphasize the importance of what is being discussed in this post. As Carey mentioned in her comment, physical health is often overlooked by students. Every activity she mentioned is an excellent way to stay healthy. I would just like to suggest a few more options.

The Campus and Recreation Services offers several instructor-led fitness classes that provide the routine and structure of meeting at the same time each week. I find that this gives me more inclination to attend. Also, I have personally developed a rapport with several instructors which motivates me to go each week. The list of classes can be found at this link (http://www.crs.umd.edu/cms/Fitness/GroupFitness/GroupFitnessSchedules.aspx)

I would also suggest taking advantage of the environment here on campus. Consider the sheer size of this large campus. Simply walking everywhere you need to go rather than driving or taking a bus will help burn calories. Also, if you live in a upper floor of a residential hall, taking the stairs as opposed to the elevator is a simple, quick option to stay active.
